Enki Bilal (b. Oct. 7, 1951 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia) is a French comic artist and film maker. His works has been published including in Pilote and Métal Hurlant magazines, and American Heavy Metal magazine. Bilal has also painted theatre scenes.
Bilal's well known work is the Nikopol Trilogy: Gods in Chaos (La Foire aux immortels, 1980), Woman Trap (La Femme piège, 1986) and Cold Equator (Froid Équateur, 1992). Cold Equator got the best book of the year award from Lire magazine in 1993. Bilal presents a new, futuristic sports called Chess Boxing. Inspired by Bilal Dutch artist Iepe Rubingh has organized real Chess Boxing matches. Whole trilogy is re-published in single graphic novel by Humanoids Publishing titled The Nikopol Trilogy in 1999.
Bilal's best works is Cold War political discourse The Hunting Party (Partie de chasse, 1983), and The Black Order Brigade (Les Phalanges de l'ordre noir, 1979), both written by Pierre Christin (known by Valerian and Laureline). Last one is published in English by Catalan publishing (1989) titled The Ranks of the Black Order.
Bilal's latest big project was the four episode Hatzfeld Tetralogy The Dormant Beast (Le sommeil du monstre, 1998), December 32 (32 Décembre, 2003), Rendezvous in Paris (Rendez-vous à Paris, 2006) and Four? (Quatre?, 2007).
