Spirited Away (2001) was Hayao Miyazaki's breakthrough film to high worldwide popularity. His next long movie was Howl's Moving Castle (2004), which bases to the juvenile adventure book by British Diana Wynne Jones. The story is also published in cinemanga.
Howl's Moving Castle is magical and spellbinding story. Miyazaki's strength is his ability to get fairy tales to live and he succeeds in the Howl's Moving Castle too. Miyazaki was inspired by Osamu Tezuka, whose manga he admired, but anime he hated.

Howl's Moving Castle is the story of young Sophie, who the evil witch has turned into a old woman. Sophie flees and jumps along to the moving castle, but it's rumored that Howl eats young girls hearts. Sophie ends up to make an agreement with firedemon called Calcifer.
Main difference with the book and the film is, that in the movie the war is ongoing, but in the book the war is just coming. Also the most interesting thing in the book is removed from the film entirely: in the movie the other side of the black door is the war, but in the book there is an weird and scary place: our world.
At the end of the book evil witch gott her Wizard of Oz-kind salary, while the film she becomes a cute grandma. Miyazaki has been determined to reform the narrative tradition. Most of his films the evil does not loose his/hers head, but becomes funny and harmless creature.
Hayao's son Goro Miyazaki's directed his first movie Tales from Earthsea (Gedo senki) in 2006. Film bases to Ursula K. Le Guin's novel.
