Mary Marvel is created by Otto Binder and Marc Swayze. Mary Marvel first appeared in Captain Marvel Adventures #18, December 1942. Her essence was stolen from actress Judy Garland. Despite her name, Mary Marvel has been DC Comics character since 1972. After it Mary Marvel appeared in new Shazam! and The Marvel Family #1 comic books with Captain Marvel (who first appeared in Whiz Comics #2) and Captain Marvel Jr. (Whiz Comics #25). Originally Mary Marvel adventured in Fawcett Comics publications from 1942 to 1953.

Mary Marvel alter ego is Mary Batson (adopted as Mary Bromfield, but finds out that she is the sister of Billy Batson, who really is Captain Marvel), and she has been the member of Marvel Family, Justice League (JLA) and Super Buddies. In 2008 crossover Final Crisis corrupted Mary Marvel appears in Female Furies superheroine team with Wonder Woman, Giganta, Catwoman and Batwoman. She is also know as a close friend of Supergirl and Superman. In 1981 Mary Marvel appeared in The Kid Super Power Hour with Shazam! TV animation series, voiced by Dawn Jeffory.
