Hellboy first appeared in San Diego Comic Con Comics August 1993 and John Byrne's Next Men #21, December 1993. Hellboy is a demon, who has raised with a humans. Hellboy works in Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defence, so he fight against the powers and creatures of his own kind.
Illustrator and scriptwriter Mike Mignola has mixed old tales and real people to his own world. Mignola has a great sense of drama; action, mystery, and humor comes all in smooth rhythm. The best in Hellboy comics is palpable sense of magic, same kind as the H.P. Lovecraft's and Edgar Allan Poe's stories. Hellboy is one of the remarcable comic book series of Modern Age. Lobster Johnson is Mignola's other same kind series. Lobster first appeared in Hellboy: Box Full of Evil #1.

The original book is always better than the movie. The familiar phrase, and keeps always the case, including the case of Hellboy. Guillermo del Toro has directed two movies about Hellboy, first in 2004, starring Ron Pearlman (Hellboy), Selma Blair (Liz Sherman), Doug Jones (Abe Sapien), John Hurt (Broom Bruttenholm), Ladislav Beran (Kroenen) and Biddy Hodson (Ilsa Haupstein). Hellboy II: The Golden Army came in 2008. It is rumored, that in third Hellboy-movie Rasputin and Kroenen will return, and also Lobster Johnson is seen on the film.
