Jack Kirby created New Gods when he left Marvel to DC. New Gods first appeared in The New Gods #1 February, 1971. At the same time Kirby made Forever People and Mister Miracle. The universe where they live is called as Jack Kirby's Fourth World by fans.
New Gods series ended at the autumn 1972. In the 1977-1978 DC published Return of the New Gods series, and started 1984 New Gods Vol 2. New Gods is also published in 1989-1991 (Vol 3, 28 issues) and 1995-1997 (Vol 4, 15 issues), written and illustrated by John Byrne. Final Crisis (2008-2009) series presents the death of the New Gods.
Most of the New Gods has put aside in the DC Universe, but Darkseid still lives one of the main enemies of Superman.
