The Shadow first appeared in Detective Story Hour radio show in 31 July, 1930. The Shadow's creepy laugh was made by Orson Welles. The Shadow Magazine pulp short stories magazine started April 1, 1931.
In comics The Shadow first appeared in newspaper strip, 1938, written and illustrated by Vernon Greene. Shadow Comics #1 comic book appeared in March 1940. Series ended with #101, 1949. Writers were including Walter B. Gibson and Otto Binder. Artists were Vernon Greene and Charles Coll. Archie Comics published The Shadow comics in 1964-1965.
Shadow Comics started again in October-November 1973, published by DC Comics. Writer were Denny O'Neil and illustrator Michael Kaluta (later Frank Robbins, who is known by Johnny Hazard and Captain America). Doc Savage and Batman has adventured with The Shadow, including in The Night of The Shadow by Irv Novick and Dick Giordano.
Howard Chaykin's four issue mini-series The Shadow: Blood and Judgment appeared in 1986. It is very similar with the Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen. Somebody murders The Shadow's old helpers, so vanished avenger must return.

The Shadow's secret identity is an aviator Kent Allard, but mostly he uses the name Lamont Cranston. The Shadow's agents are Margo Lane, Harry Vincent, driver Moe "Shrevy" Shrevnitz and reporter Clyde Burke. His greatest enemy is Shiwan Khan. The Shadow is famous for his lines: "The weed of crime bears bitter fruit", "crime does not pay" and "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?" Last one he ansvers himself: "The Shadow knows!"
