The Smurfs (Les Schtroumpfs) by Peyo (Pierre Culliford b. 25 June 1928, d. 24 Dec. 1992) are one of the well known Belgian comic characters. Smurfs first appeared in Spirou magazine in Johan and Peewit (Johan et Pirlouit) comic series in October 1958, in the story The flute with six wholes (La flûte à six trous). Very own Smurfs comics appeared in 1959, and the first graphic novel was The Black Smurfs (Les Schtroumpfs noirs) in 1963.
The first Smurfs figurine set was procuded by Dupuis 1959. Set contained three diffirent, 2 inches tall Smurfs. First mass-produced PVC Smurf collectible figurines made Schleich company in 1965. In the 1970s German company Bully made Smurfs figurines as a promotion for Kellogg's.

The Smurfs are tiny blue skin creatures who live in the hidden village in the middle of the forrest. Every Smurf has his own kind of a personality and skills. Most famous Smurfs are Papa Smurf, leader of the Smurfs, and Smurfette, who was the first female Smurf in the village. Their greatest enemies are Gargamel the Sorcerer and his cat Azrael. Gargamel is obsessed to catch the Smurfs and eat them (or use in a potion to make gold). Smurfs has their own language, and word "smurf" is quite popular.
The Smurfs movie is coming 2011 from the director Raja Gosnel, starring John Lithgow and Wallace Shawn (Gargamel). The movie mixes 3D animation and live acting.
The first Smurfs animation movie has made 1965 and titled The Adventures of the Smurfs (Les Aventures des Schtroumpfs). Second Smurf film The Smurfs and the Magic Flute (La Flûte à six schtroumpfs) came in 1976. Hanna-Barbera Productions animated television series made The Smurfs world wide celebrities. Series runned in 1981-1990. Smurfs movies has also made in 1982, 1984 and 1999. Nowadays Smurfs is possible to see everywhere - and hear. Smurfs single The Smurf Song raised to #1 in sixteen countries.
