Will Eisner (1917-2005) was one of the main developers of western comics. He wrote many cartoon drawing guides, and created the first graphic novel.
Will Eisner created The Spirit in 1940. The stories focuses to the life of the ordinary people and small criminals. Spirit is just a force who appears at the end of the story, and puts things into right line. Seven comic pages of every issue includes humour, excitement and romance, and something intelligent about human nature. Spirit was decades ahead of its time, and it is still very modern comic series. It is good quide to comic-making for anyone.
Eisner's ordinary people life-portraits culminated in 1978 in graphic novel A Contract with God. Partly self-biographical Dreamer (1986) bases to the life in Eisner-Iger company in early 1930's. Eisner and Jerry Iger hired their studio talented young artists, including Bob Kane and Jack Kirby, who later succeeded well in their career.
The Best of The Spirit (DC Comics, 2005) is nearly 200 pages collection the best Spirit stories. Book also collects Sand Saref-episodes, which are the basis to The Spirit movie (2008), directed by Frank Miller. Gabriel Macht is in the role of The Spirit and Denny Colt, Eva Mendes is Sand Saref, Samuel L. Jackson is The Octopus and Scarlett Johansson is Silken Floss.
