Wolverine: Origins of the Special Man

Wolverine first appeared in Incredible Hulk #180-#182, 1974. Wolverine became a member of the revamped X-Men, and his adventures continued in Giant-Size X-Men #1 and The Uncanny X-Men #94, August 1975. Wolverine became immediately highly popular.

Frank Miller and Chris Claremont made a four issue Wolverine mini-series in 1982. It was Wolverine's first solo adventure, and propably the best Wolverine-story ever made. Wolverine goes to Japan to find out why his lover Mariko Yashida do not ansver his letters anymore. Wolverine gets ninja-organization Hand (first appeared in Daredevil #168, 1981) to his neck, and horny lady assasin Yukio makes her first appearance. Wolverine's catch phrase: "I'm the best there is at what I do, but what I do isn't very nice" was launched in this series. Story is re-published in the Wolverine by Claremont & Miller #1 TPB, March 2009.

Wolverine's past was long a mystery. He used name Logan, but the six-issue series Origin (from November 2001 to July 2002) revealed that Wolverine's real name is James Howlett. Story also sheds light to Wolverine's violent past and connection to Alpha Flight.

Wolverine is a mutant, and he has got accelerated healing process and sensitized senses as his birth gift. Government of Canada modified Wolverine a complete killing machine, Weapon-X, by putting his skeleton unbracable metal, adamantium. Wolverine's weapon is long claws which are hidden below his skin.

Wolverine is basically fair, but he may take justice to his own claws when he feels, that justice is done only through the death. Wolverine drinks beer and smokes cigars, why not, he will improve in any case immediately without the slightest side effects. Wolverine has also his gentle side, he communicates with animals, and when he hunts, he only touches to deer, not kill it.

X-Men leader Cyclops trusts rational and intelligent thinking, so his and Wolverine's personalities conflict has been X-Men series fuel for many years. Both were also deeply in love to Jane Grey, Phoenix (later Dark Phoenix).
